Warm sunny days and cool nights like we have in the Finger Lakes tend to bring about the most vibrant colors. We also have rolling hills, sun-dappled gorges and scenic vistas overlooking vineyards and long slender lakes, framed by all that remarkable color: the oranges and reds, yellows and golds.

In Steuben the opportunity for breathtaking photographs abounds along the many hiking trails, scenic byways, and small towns nestled among the foothills.

From the Heart of the Forest

There are plenty of hiking trails, state parks and forests in the Finger Lakes where you can let wander through lush woodlands of magnificent color.

Hiking Trails – The Finger Lakes TrailKeuka Outlet Trail, and Spencer Crest Nature Center offer an abundance of foliage along miles of forest footpaths. There’s just something about standing among the trees.

Steuben County also has a number of State Forests and State Parks that put you in the heart of the forest, like Stony Brook State Park and Mossy Bank Park, Birdseye Hollow State Forest, McCarthy Hills State Forest, Urbana State Forest and more.

From the Water

One remarkable way to encounter fall colors is paddling one of our waterways which often put you in the middle of panoramic scenery, but you also get to enjoy all that color reflected on the water.

Paddle your way along the Chemung, Cohocton, or Canisteo rivers. Experience multicolored hillsides surrounding Keuka Lake.

From the Wineries

While one might argue Finger Lakes wineries are best for enjoying the delicious fruits of the vineyards, they also provide some of the best vantage points for a scenic landscape.

Surrounded by vast vineyards, bountiful trees displaying various shades of autumn and gorgeous views of Keuka Lake, no wonder the wineries are a favorite for people looking for the perfect Fall photo.

From the Road

Experience fall foliage from the comfort of your car. Take a drive through small towns, along Keuka Lake, and on scenic country roads.

From sprawling farmlands to expansive hillsides, there are a variety of picturesque locations waiting to be captured.

Here are a couple country roads to try:

  • Route 36 between Jasper and Canisteo
  • Route 21 between Hornell and Wayland

Cycling is another way to take advantage of the beautiful byways that connect our small towns.
